Its primary purpose is to pay tribute to those who died in service to their country, whether in times of peace or war. Unlike Veterans Day, which honors all who have served, Memorial Day is specifically for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Gatherings such as cookouts and special events are good ways to allow community members to get together, but please keep the reason for the day in mind. Rather than a celebration, it’s a day of mourning and remembrance.
